DIRECTIONS:
At the only 4-way traffic light in Houston, proceed on N. Main St, for .4 mile. Make a right onto Wylie Ave. Go all the way to the top of the hill (.3 mile). Make a left onto Cemetery Lane. There is a green sign with "Chartiers Cemetery" on it. The cemetery is about 150 ft. down the lane. |

HISTORY:
This small black cemetery is under the auspices of the Chartiers Cemetery Association (CCA). Reportedly, after the burial ground maintained by Payne A.M.E. Church, in nearby Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, was filled, the land for Chartiers Cemetery was donated by Mr. William Davis. The area contains many unmarked graves. According to information furnished by the CCA, the cemetery was established in 1914 and was once called Covenant Cemetery. In funeral programs it has also been referred to as Houston Cemetery. Earlier burial information has not been found; however, interments from 1933-1980 were made by Speakman Funeral Home, Houston, Pennsylvania. According to Speakman records, there were no burials here in 1947, 1948, 1954, 1957, 1968, 1972-1974 and 1976-1979. The last burial was that of Dessie D. Hilton on 7 Feb. 1980. Recent restoration efforts and maintenance of the area have been primarily accomplished by Robert L. Campbell and Jerome Davis, members of the Chartiers Cemetery Association. |
